Three people were rescued from the roof of a Surfers paradise unit after a fireball engulfed the complex.
Fire officers also rescued two people from a second-storey balcony of the Cannes Court Holiday Apartments complex
and three others from inside after the fire broke out about 1.45am.
Police said a thief who had taken a considerable amount of money from the ground-floor office of the three-storey
complex was believed to have started the fire to cover his tracks. |

A woman, 35, who was unable to get out of her unit, was found semi-conscious in her bedroom by fire officers and
taken to Gold Coast Hospital. The woman was treated for minor burns to her hands and smoke inhalation, and was
released later in the day.
A Detective said the fire was probably started with accelerants and other flammable liquids found on the ground
floor of the building. He said fire-resistant doors that were fitted to all units certainly saved lives. The doors
had prevented units being engulfed by a fireball which had raced up the building's internal stairs and also set
the exterior of the building alight. |
